Spanish in Europe and in Latin America - a Requisite Differentiation
Spanish is used as the official language in 21 countries across the globe, and in states of the USA too. Nearly 400 million people speak Spanish as their native language, another 60 million who speak it as a second language. In consequence of this, Spanish is the fourth most frequently spoken language in the world. Spanish belongs to the Ibero-Romance branch of the Indo-Germanic languages. The written language (castellano / español) was formed by the linguistic usage of the central Spanish region of Castile. In addition, a large number of indigenous expressions have been introduced into the Spanish linguistic usage of the states of South and Central America.
Because of the differences in vocabulary and pronunciation, a distinction is usually made between Continental and American Spanish, in which the latter exhibits, in turn, some differences from country to country. Generally speaking, these differences do not prevent mutual comprehension, but they cause a range of misunderstandings. For a professional Spanish translator from the Latin American region it is necessary, therefore, to take these national differences into account.
An example is the Spanish word guagua. While in the Canary Islands, Cuba and the Dominican Republic it is synonymous with (city) bus, in the Andean countries like Chile, Peru or Ecuador it is metonymic with toddler or small child. Here, this word comes from the indigenous language of Quechua.
