Translation-Friendly Writing Saves Time and Money

The use of translation memory systems frequently has the result that only individual sections of text remain to be translated due to the fact that many segments repeat themselves in the further course of the text and are recognised by the system automatically. The more consistently the terminology is used, the less the translator has to do first-time translation work. Different terminology for the same work step or the same component, however, is identified and saved by the software as separate terms, which can have a host of designations in the target language as a result.

Text formulated in a translation-friendly way takes this into account. Not only can it be produced faster and less expensively as a result, it is also of consistently higher quality because:

  • The use of translation memory systems is more efficient
  • The text can be read more easily and as a result of this is easier to understand
  • The error rate due to misunderstandings decreases
  • The translator has more time for the optimal translation of genuinely trickier passages
  • The translator's time and effort spent searching is minimised
  • The text can be translated expeditiously

When generating source text one should also make sure to formulate sentences according to uniform structures. Example: Either continuously: "Position the master switch on OFF" or alternatively: "Position main switch on OFF".

Other suggested guidelines, not only with respect to the use of translation memories, are:

  • specifying unambiguous acceptation/denotation for every word
  • not using any synonyms
  • glossing new terms and abbreviations
  • not using any filler words
  • using simple sentence structures
  • observing logical sequence
  • using no more than one call to action per sentence
  • using language-independent illustrations
