Thai/Siamese is an important language in the East Asian region of the so-called "tiger" states.
Thailand recovered from the Asian economic crisis in the years 1997 and 1998 faster than its neighbours. Economic growth was already back at 4 percent in 2006. Around 400 German firms are represented in Thailand, many medium-sized companies among them. German economic interests are directed predominantly toward infrastructure projects, the automobile industry and, for the last few years, toward the environmental technologies industry.
Thai/Siamese is spoken by 60 million native speakers and another 20 million people in the region speak it as a second language. The following factor is critical with respect to a professional Thai translation: The historically evolved hierarchic structure of the society has spread to the Thai language too. There are three "levels of Thai", which must be taken into account in the course of a translation:
- the common colloquial language without politeness particles
- the elevated language with politeness particles and partially different vocabulary
- the official language that is heard in public statements and communications
In addition, there is still an official courtly language which is used among the aristocracy and a monastic language which is strongly influenced by Sanskrit and Pali. But for a Thai/Siamese translation these variants are of lesser significance.
