Tamil Translations from Transline
Tamil belongs to the Dravidian linguistical group and is one of the 22 recognised official and national languages of India. It is less heavily influenced by the Sanskrit than the rest of the written Dravidian languages and has a linguistic and literary history spanning more than 2000 years. As a result, Tamil is the only classical and modern language among the Indian languages at the same time.
Tamil is essentially spoken in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry). In addition to the approx. 66 million native speakers, of whom the majority live in India, there are another 8 million of those who speak it as a second language. What is more, Tamil is recognised as an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore too. Since the British colonial period, major Tamil-speaking groups exist in Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius as well.
