Swedish in Europe
On account of the EU enlargement to the east, Swedish has slipped to seventh place in the list of the largest European languages. However there are several reasons why Swedish ought not to be absent from any European operating manual or the like. Sweden is one of the most prosperous countries in the world with a per capita gross national product of more than € 30,000. This is almost ten times as much as in Poland, for example. Furthermore, Swedish is the most important language in Scandinavia and is understood by both the Danes and the Norwegians. Beside the 8.5 million Swedish native speakers, there are, again by extension, an additional 10 million people who understand Swedish.
Since the upheaval in Eastern Europe during the years 1989 to 1991, the interest in Swedish in Russia and the other Eastern European states - particularly in the Baltic countries - has increased sharply. Meanwhile, Swedish is offered as a subject of study at many academies. At present, Swedish is studied by 40,000 foreign students total, while the important centres of Swedish instruction abroad are still located in Finland, the USA and Germany.
