Slovenian as a Stand-Alone Language Within the EU

About 2 million people in Slovenia speak Slovenian as their native language. It is also an official language of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and therefore binding for translations of operating instructions that are used within the EU.

Outside Slovenia, there are still some Slovenian native speakers in Austria and Italy. The Slovenian language and the Kajkavian dialect of the Croatian language are so similar that one can refer to the Slovenian as transitioning fluidly into the Croatian in the regions concerned.

Windisch [Wendish], the conventional word used in Austria for Slovenian, just like the traditional Wendisch [Wendish] in Northern and Eastern Germany, is the original German name for all Slavic languages. Because the Slovenian dialects in Austria had many German loan words on account of the centuries-old language contacts with the German, the incorrect impression of a "Slavic-German hybrid language" was able to develop among laymen as a result: the Windisch; this impression is deceptive, since the entire "Wendish" grammar and likewise the basic vocabulary is Slovenian.
