The Georgian languages belongs to the family of Southern Caucasian languages and is the official language of Georgia. Smaller groups in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Greece, Iran, Russia and Turkey are among the approx. 5 million speakers of Georgian as well. The Georgian language is written in the alphabetical script Mkhedruli (also: called "Georgian alphabet"), which is derived from the Aramaic script and contains 33 letters. Many loan words from the ancient Latin and Greek, as well as from the Persian, Arabic, Russian, Turkish and increasingly in more recent times from the English, have been added to the Georgian language too.
