Flemish or Dutch? A Small, but Fine Distinction
Dutch (Nederlandse taal) is incorrectly called 'Holländisch' in everyday German, after the Dutch region of Holland [cf. the French 'hollandaise'], or 'Flemish', after the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. Flemish is, accordingly, a dialect of Dutch. It is spoken by the inhabitants of Flanders, the region of northern Belgium. However, the standard Dutch language is used as the official and written language in Flanders just as in the Netherlands.
Even if there is no written language that might necessitate a Flemish translation, there still are cultural differences that may be worth noting in the course of a translation. This is why here too it comes down to the use of native-speaking translators from the particular language area.
