The Catalan Language
In addition to Spanish, Catalan is the official regional language of Catalonia, in Valencia, on the Balearics and is also spoken in the French Département Pyrénées Orientales. The Catalan is the official language in Andorra too. In total there are barely 10 million people living in these areas today who have an active command of Catalan.
As the Vulgar Latin dialect of prime importance, Catalan is not a dialect of the Spanish; it prides itself on a linguistic history of its own dating back to the 9th century AD. Notwithstanding, communication between speakers of the Spanish and the Catalan is not difficult for the most part. After the Catalan language had been systematically curbed during the Franco autarchy and removed from public life, it was specifically recultivated by the Catalan regional government over the last few decades. Instruction and lectures in the Catalan language are the norm today in schools and universities; knowledge of Catalan has to be substantiated by all civil servants too.
